SO MUCH WRAPPING.

after thinking that Christmas was lame, and I had the retail blues, some creativity and DAISO Japan saved the day!

I got the boys and girls all taken care of, and the boyfriend too, with accenting from vintage wrapping paper. I love the blue tool paper. It came in a package marked "Masculine Paper". What better paper could I use for my manly man?

Also fun pins from the Walt Disney Family Museum that can ONLY be found there. A little lace really helped cover up the ugly black cardboard they put them on.

Larissa drawing!

I had some time at work to do some drawing, so I pumped out a lovely Larissa! Yay Jerkwater, when the holidays are over, I'm going to have a real website to update!!

Jerkwater final cast!

I have narrowed down my character list to these 6 girls!

Peanuts inspiration!

I went to the Cartoonist Spotlight Ru was asked to do at the Charles Schultz Museum, and was inspired to do a few comics! They had premade panel pages, so I did a few comics, and then a full page pin-up of Lucy!

The first is a Snoopy comic.

The second one was for Jerkwater Drones, the zombie high school girl comic I swear I'm going to work on.

Finally, Miss Lucy, all grown up!

AW YEEEEAH DRAWING AGAIN.

PAINTING has occured!!

Well, I finally made use of those blank nesting dolls I got at Flax in 2000! My gran has had 3 cats in my lifetime, so I immortalized them!

Acrylic Paint and some Modge Podge!

Then I got to work wrapping tiny gifts for my friends. Lots more to come, but they are so CUUUUUTE. I had so much fun making them!

I love using brown paper bags for this shit! Looks so good with a little scrap paper!

The vixen and the badger.

I was listening a cover of one of my favorite songs the other day, and was inspired to do little doots. The Fox by Nickel Creek is just amazing, so you should check it out!

Anyway, these are my doodles. There is no badger in the song, but hell, I really liked the style I did it in, so I needed one more creature!

This song makes me thing of my grandfather, since he was the big bluegrass fan. I would sing this song with my dad and talk about him. Touching, ain't it?

My Little Fanarts.

FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC people. Thanks for the life lessons My Little Pony.

I have done heads of all of the girls, for massive amounts of no reason at all. Cutey marks make great earrings. I may have to make some. Obviously these are the main ponies.

Don't judge me. I love effing ponies, and anime. My next post is original stuff, I swear!!

You wanted MORE fanart? OK!

Oh Netflix, once again you have brought me something amazing. My favorite Anime of all time. I have been watching it with Breena the last 3 days, as I mentioned before, but the fanarting bug has gotten more and more serious. I’ll start with my post about this, and then the other drawings I’ve been working on!

First, my OTP for the series, Zelgadis and Amelia. I always imagine Amelia having longer hair, so I just do it.

Then one of Xellos and Lina. Xellos is probably my favorite supporting character, and he and a gap commercial from my youth inspired my long lasting screen name, MeLLoXeLLoS.

And finally, the most important.

Woo anime fanart!!

I was making Breena watch Slayers with me while we we drawing, and couldn't help myself. I had to draw us together. My boyfriend has the novels that came out years ago, which is initially what spurred this rush of Slayers love.

Yeeeeeeah. I still watch Anime.

Christmas Wrapping...yes already.

Mom and I went shopping, and got a bunch of stocking stuff...so I thought, I'm going to wrap them the way I want to.

Admittedly, I hate the fact that My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music became a Christmas song that every bad jazz singer felt the need to cover. HATE IT. But I love brown paper packages tied up with string. Hemp string. And brown paper from left over shopping bags. It's not just for wrapping school books with, kids! get some double sided tape, and get a'wrappin'!

You can now enjoy not blowing huge money on wrapping, and still have it look really nice. This pleases everyone, and if you really want to, all you need is some holiday tags. Hell, cut out shapes and punch a hole in it, then tie on after the knot on the package, then bow over it. Go wild. And also look at my face, which is just as pretty as those presents.

The Boyfriend's Cat.

I was able to pump out a comic about my boyfriend's cat, Hawkins. It is a long comic, because he is a long cat. YES. LONG CAT IS STILL RELEVANT.

Tattooed Love Girls!

My series of La Pink Palace Salon drawings made me really wanna draw my little lovely I made up for the series.

I need a name for her! Someone give me a good name for her!

Be a Badger...about safety!

So my bosses decided that the badger is the best mascot, so I was left with the task of developing them.

I tried to do it in the style of school animal mascots. Fierce and fun! I really think I nailed it!

Before them we had these stupid owls. I didn't like them, and they did NOT go with the red background at all.

They sure do now!! I'm so proud of them!

"Logan recommended you."

It looks like LA Pink Palace Salon has another extraordinary client! Scott Summers needs a little him time too!

I may seriously do a series of these!

There ya go, Megan!

Multiple layers? SHUT up photoshop.

So, I've never done a piece with more than 3 layers. It's my secret to having so much finished work. Lack of time spent doing everything individually. Well, I took on the task of making the header banner for my friend Kayla's website. I decided to treat it like a papercraft. Now I'm jealous, because I want one. Then...I was like...OH MY GOD STUPID, YOU CAN MAKE ONE FOR YOU after. But seriously, I do better work for others, because I'm sick like that. Call it..."my area of growth!"

I must say, being an illustrator all this time really makes stuff like this hard for me, because I want BLACK DARK OUTLINES on everything. Bad Rachel. Quit outlining every little thing. Crazy beezy. This is the result if you don't!

POST 101. OH MAN. I need to do a celebratory drawing for that...OR try to make it to 200 posts by December. Oh Rachel, shut up your thoughts.

Anyway, this drawing is of (from left to right) me, Kane Lynch, Ru, and Breena.

POST APE inspirations!

I am so into drawing right now, thanks to APE. I've decided tonight will be a night for Anime Fanart as well, since I'm seriously considering a table for Fanime. (FOR PROFITS AND AWKWARD PEOPLE.)

I'm sure there are many nice people, all joking and high school bitchiness aside. I am the most glad to get my Xmas card design done this year, WAY early. Not only that, but Then I got the brilliant idea to make them POSTCARDS too, so I can send them to people! WOOOO. so smart.

Christmas Cupcakes will always knock you off your feet!

AND. Candy corn makes for great cupcake snowmen noses.

Talked to Ru and Kayla about having a Christmas Card Party...because we are effing women. ALSO. 12 hour comic book day, for grandmas and grandpas that have to work and stuff! I may have to organize this.

The last thing is that I finally did a Brodown fanart I'd been promising for some...time...Here on Ru's blog. As it is gift art, I will not post it here, but I will take MAD credit for it. READ THE ASTOUNDING BRODOWN, kids!

SEWING? BADLY? SHUT YOUR MOUTH.

Yeah, so I am really bad at sewing. I accept that about myself.
Anyway. Victoria Ying is amazing. She has worked on alot of Disney stuff, including Tangled.

She made a design for a fabric that you can order with your own design at Spoonflower.com. She sells them on her etsy, and you can see the designs here on her blog!

But, I totally fell in love with the fabric, so I got it, and took it to my grandmother's in hope that we would be able to make 4 tea napkins out of them. of course that would be alot of work, ESPECIALLY since I suck forever at things like this. But, it is starting to shape up really nicely. We added some delicate lace that she had laying around, and then some blue ribbon!!

(I totally left it to her to finish, haha. Merry Christmas to me!)

Work Art!

I've been on Sign Team for Trader Joe's for a while now, and it's a really cool gig. I get to improve my handwriting, draw, and jam to my ipod for 8 hours. (No, it's not that gravy a deal, but it's so close to that!)

So, I had to make some quick signs, but unlike the others we've made in the store, I was told that my "STYLE" would be really nice to have for this project.

I actually remembered to take pictures of it, since I'm working on a portfolio of sorts! I don't remember to get everything, so I'm glad I at least got this one. I'm really proud of him!

Blast from the past, Anime Club

So, I found a copy I had made of the Anime Club flyer that Ru and I once ran. It's uh...cute.

So I had no choice to redo it. I added Edward Elric because it's a show that Ru likes alot. Still. Like I love Slayers, still.

UH. WE DON'T LIKE EVA. EVER. EVER. EVER.

So, awful times continues with a little strip about my boyfriend and I. Being total winners at life.

The second is a gift art for my friend Charlie Irons.

That is all. I am on the final count down to 100 posts! SUPER great! I'm looking for ideas for a 100 posts celebration picture! GIVE ME IDEAS YOU PEOPLES!

Awful Times: My life as a comic

This is the first of many autobiographical comics. I will let it tell the story.

First of many posts!

I'm going to start with my favorite new show! Game of Thrones is the best thing to happen to me since Rome. An HBO series is like watching a movie that is as long as it needs to be to share all of itself with you, while keeping that beautiful cinematic quality. GUSH GUSH GUSH it's so good.
I had to do fanart immediately. After watching season one, I carefully chose my favorite characters. Arya of course, because she is a total badass, and Daenerys Targaryen. Khaleesi of all badasses.

I decided that Dany will be my first GOT fanart. I chose watercolor as the medium, and got to work. First, I referred to my Doug Sneyd Playboy artbook for some soft profiles and body structures. I then sketched her out, and used a brown fountain pen to ink it.

I started with her skin, pale, but slightly browned from the sun. Winsor & Newton paints made all the difference for really beautiful, true colors.

Watercolor has become one of my favorite mediums, since it really gives life to a drawing, even a tiny one. For my mom's birthday, I made her a really neat painting and put it in a Swedish frame I got from my friend's garage sale. The painting is very mexican in quality, and even transfers that feeling over to the frame!

Fanart Post progress.

So, I got it in my head to start shading my comics with marker outside the computer to cut down on the initial photoshop time it usually takes me to work.
In the previous post to this one, you can see this image with only sepia shading I made with prisma marker colors, parchment, khaki, and colorless blender.

It literally cut my work in half. I didn't have to focus on the depth of the image, so I could take time with the other details of it. I'm really grateful to have a method that will make my life so much easier. I really like the earthy texture that marker can give an image, but scanning a completely marker colored work just doesn't have the same power as the original. This is a happy medium.

Blogging failures and Triumphs

For last month's original character challenge, which I totally FLAKED on, I started with a more complex method.

As lovely as my little Carlotta turned out, it was very time consuming to pump out a drawing like this.

Thankfully, this month is fanart, which, sadly, is easier to get behind than drawing my own damn characters. You can see the uncolored preview for SURE!

Sailor Moon, Julia Wertz, Elphaba, and Lina Inverse.

The girls of Miyazaki

So between Amy and Ru, we had quite a few Miyazaki movies to watch one night when the mood struck us. (By the way, that mood is ALL the time.)
I remembered not really caring for Kiki's Delivery Service, and my thoughts are still pretty much the same. BUT. I do like Kiki herself, and her excellent taste in shoes.

After that, we watched a few others, and I doodled a few more of my favorite girls hanging out, but the one I am kicking myself for forgetting is the Red Head from Porco Rosso!!! I will dedicate a post to her later maybe!
But for now, Sophie, Kiki, and Chihiru!

FORVER VACATION.

Well, as much fun as it was to live my life, I'm back now! I have quite of few things to post, so I think I will break them up between posts. First, we will start with some FANART.

Of Marceline, the Vampire Queen.
I really enjoy drawing adventure time characters in my style, but this is the first one I liked enough to ink! It was really fun indie ink practice! Hopefully I'll get more into doing some monochromatic work. I'd like to make some pretty cool wash effects with some pieces. I'm thinking that for this year's 24 hour comic day, I may shoot for indie ink washes, since shading is fun and I'm pretty good at it!

Papercrafting for my best friend.

AND HER CAT. Who liked to sleep on Cacti.

I tired to show more of the process, but I won't like...I get all in my head about the composition, and then I just RUN with it.

I did a preliminary drawing of this papercraft, and actually used my lightbox this time, so get it as close to my original plan as I possibly could! It turned out really well! (I even included on my notes that there had to be an adorable animal butthole!)

At first I was apprehensive to use markers, pens, or anything else besides paper to make these crafts. This time I was unafraid. I broke out my brown Copic pens, used my prismacolor markers, AND even stickers from the crafting stickers I got.

Then all I had to do was get her up! I use shadowbox frames from IKEA because they are just cheaper and easier. Sorry I'm not willing to pay 50 bucks for a "decent" framing. I think it looks pretty effing good, myself.

Papercrafting just turned into Scrapbooking.

I have made the jump! Thanks my sudden acquiring of scrapbook paper, I decided to make some fun little stationary cards.

This first one I made for Ru to use as stationary! The sandcastle is one of those awesome 3D stickers! It's like...babycraft!

This one is made with mostly sticker border and stickers, but by god, I threw it together! I thought these colors represented Breena nicely!

I needed to see if the dark colors would work for me too, so I did one for Hayley that has even darker colors. I'm pretty happy with it. Hell, at the very least, the colors are complimentary.

Finally, I did one for my mumzy. She loves bees. I know right, EFFING BEES. Why? Because they are cute, and they make honey. Not because they kill more people a year than most other "dangerous" animals. WTF ever, the card is cute.

P.S., Amykins, I am going to make one for you, but it will have to be frilly and REALLY over girled, so JUST YOU WAIT.

Next, PAPERCRAFTING FOR FUNZIEZ.
